The painter prepares surfaces, intermixes colors to match paint materials, and applies a variety of coatings and finishes. S/he maintains stock inventory of paints within the paint shop, maintains records and associated Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Is responsible for the organization, up keep, and cleaning of the paint shop. Coating work at this grade level is accomplished by any acceptable methods of the trade including special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining, by using coating materials that are prepared in special as well as common ways, and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness, level and other requirements. He/she must know the use and application of shellac, varnish, and lacquer materials; latex paints, Teflon, paint removers, phosphate compounds, antigrowth agents for both interior and exterior surfaces, exterior base paints, gloss, semi-gloss, and flat enamels, as well as the purposes of each. He/she applies materials with brush, roller, or spray, or other devices as may be required. He/she repairs cracks, joints and nail holes with spackle or putty adapted to the nature of the project to be repaired. He/she sands, does necessary preparatory work, and completes the work In a professional manner. He/she cuts, glazes, and Installs window glass and other such Items as may fall In the category of a journeyman painter. The Painter prepares surfaces by methods such as smoothing with pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coating agents, for example, pickling and alkali compounds. He/she prepares coating materials prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending and mixing various additives. This description is not all inclusive. Other related duties will be assigned. This is a term appointment not to exceed 2 years. Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration of more than 1 year, but not more than 4 years and are subject to a 1 year trial period. Should the need warrant, term appointments may be extended without further competition up to a maximum of the 4 year limitation. The appointment to a term position does not confer eligibility for promotion, reassignment, or transfer to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Experience:
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality that demonstrates your ability to do the work of a Painter without more than normal supervision. Such experience includes:
surface preparation and coating methods and techniques; building up, shaping, and leveling surfaces; matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials; and using painting and surface preparation equipment. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Some work assignments will require strenuous effort; such as lifting and holding, stretching, bending, and kneeling. Manual effort is required in different situations. The carrying of heavy loads is minimal, but is required on occasion. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Detailed work to the Marion Campus at VA Northern Indiana Health Care System will be required for support. Station of duty will be the Fort Wayne Campus, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Exterior work will be dependent on outside weather conditions. Interior work will be assigned daily without consideration to the outside weather conditions. Coordination of all work will be required with the occupants of the space.
