VA Northern Indiana Health Care Systems, (VANIHCS), is larger than just a single facility. It is a fully-integrated medical care facility with a dual campuses in Fort Wayne and Marion and Community Based Outpatient Clinics, (CBOCs), in Goshen, South Bend, Peru and Muncie, Indiana and combined VA mission. The combined mission of the VANIHCS means military retirees, and eligible veterans receive health care at these facilities.
This position is located within the Social Work Service and will be filled at the Marion campus.

These duties are not exclusive of all duties of the position Incumbent serves as the Primary Care Mental Health Integration Social Worker in the Social Work Services for the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS). At the GS-11 grade, the PCMHI Social Worker is assigned to VA Northern Indiana Health Care System's Primary Care and Mental Health Clinics. The incumbent must use a high level of skill in assessing and treating the complicated psychosocial problems of veterans. Social Work responsibilities include the assessment of psychosocial problems, often at a time when the veteran is experiencing crisis and include the provision of short term, solution-focused counseling with veterans and/or their family members/significant others. Referrals typically originate from members of the interdisciplinary team, from veterans and/or their family members/significant others, coming as walk-ins to seek assistance, and from community professionals. The incumbent must complete thorough assessments to
determine the presenting problem to determine in-home factors impacting the problem and to determine obstacles to treatment and/or follow through with recommended treatments. Consultation with members of the outpatient interdisciplinary team is provided in order to coordinate a collaborative effort to meet the agreed upon goals for the veteran's treatment needs and include liaison with community professionals regarding needed services for veterans and/or their families. Working with various patient populations include, but are not limited to, homeless veterans, Hospice Services, Community Living Center, Home Health services, financial resources, VA benefits, and transportation services.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
Licensure or certification by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
English language proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Specialist Experience for GS-11 Level: Requires a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree professional social work experience in the field of health care. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.
Substitution Education for Experience at the GS-11 Level: To meet the required specialized experience for the GS-11 level, applicant may substitute a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work. You must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.
Grade Determinations: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments.
Preferred Experience/Certification: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
