8K - $39K a year Job Summary Coders are responsible for correctly coding healthcare claims in order to obtain reimbursement from insurance and government healthcare programs.
They use specialized medical classification software to assign ICD and CPT procedure and diagnosis codes for insurance billing.
They will identify inconsistencies in the record and query providers when appropriate.
Coders also review claims data to ensure that orders are in place and providers are assigned properly.
They are responsible for emergency room and observation charging using software that ensures consistent, compliant assignment of resources.
The inpatient coder is responsible for coding inpatient, acute rehab, and observation to inpatient accounts.
The inpatient coder will be involved in the appeal process as part of the hospital's denials and DRG audit teams.
They also abstract information needed for statistical data.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements High school diploma or its equivalent.
One of the following credentials:
Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P), or Certified Procedural Coder (CPC).
Completion of college level Applied Science courses in Anatomy/Physiology and Medical Terminology.
Two (2) years ICD, CPT and DRG coding experience.
Must be an Indiana Resident Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, providers and other hospital personnel on a one-to-one basis using appropriate grammar, vocabulary and word usage.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
Excellent time management, and organizational skills.
Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting and work well in a team environment.
Developed computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone system and the ability to learn and proficiently perform computer applications related to department operations and job function.
Excellent customer service skills.
High degree of accuracy with concentration and close attention to detail.
Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
Working Conditions Typical office environment with prolonged sitting.
Work subject to interruptions.
Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
Works with protected health information.
